The growth of powerful radical Islamist forces has scared a lot of countries. One could (falsely) romanticise the PLO as a progressive national liberation movement. But Hamas, Hizbullah and their patron, Iran, even Muslim countries would agree, are a harder sell.

It’s easy to be misled by elements of Western media and academia that seem to prefer terrorists and radical Islamists to Israel. The diplomatic balance sheet from Israel’s standpoint is quite good, pretty remarkably good, better than it has been for a very long time.

Of course, I have to add quickly that there are real problems, disagreements, and specific frictions. I’ll come to that in a moment. But first the good news:
Countries with which Israel has great relations: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and also those of the European Union and Nato. Moreover, there is a long list of former Soviet Bloc states which understand the difference between a democratic state defending itself and a bunch of ideologically driven, dictatorship-worshipping terrorists. They include the new EU chair, the Czech Republic, and a dozen others, of which Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lithuania and Poland can stand as examples. And last but not least most of sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Non-Muslim, countries with which Israel has bad relations: Colombia, North Korea, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. Perhaps you can come up with a few others. Nominations are open.
This description is accurate and should be acknowledged. Please do so.

Now, on to the small print. Friendly countries often have criticisms, for example, they may urge a ceasefire in the Gaza war or show some pressure regarding settlements. Such diplomatic initiatives may make headlines but really don’t amount to much in real terms. Israel’s vital interests are not threatened by such things.

Friends can disagree; a lot of these actions are publicity stunts or attempts to show the countries in question have ‘balanced’ policies. Regarding what is important —— things like normal relations, trade (including military-related equipment), basic support, sanctions against extremist enemies —— these relationships deliver.

Some of these positive relationships depend on which Government is in power —— obviously in France and Italy —— and that’s part of the point. These Governments were elected and thus reflect public opinion. Obviously, Israel was not an important issue in these choices but the results show large elements of policy-making elites are friendly and public opinion isn’t demanding leaders hostile to that country.

In France, the Government of Mr Francois Sarkozy replaced that of the notably less friendly Jacque Chirac. The relationship with the new President has been a good one. While Mr Sarkozy’s soft policy toward Lebanon and Syria have disappointed me —— not to mention the Lebanese moderates who he has failed to back against the Tehran-Damascus axis —— they are not in sharp conflict with Israeli policies. His recent foray into pushing a poorly conceived ceasefire in Gaza indicate his impulsive interventionism (France must act as a great power), but unquestionably his is the most friendly to Israel Government in France over the last half-century.

With China, Israel has a good bilateral relationship though Chinese policies are often problematic. Beijing’s goals, however, in such activities as its arms’ sales (reportedly Chinese-made rockets sold to Iran and then given to Hamas have been fired at Israel) or its reluctance to support sanctions against Iran, include profit-making, a desperate need for oil, and fear that international pressure might be turned against China some day.

China, like many of the other countries mentioned above, has a much friendlier policy partly due to the breaking of the myth that it was impossible to have good relations with both Israel and the Arab world. In part, this was always untrue; in part, changes in the international system —— the Cold War’s end, the peace process, etc —— made it easier to do. Israel’s technological wealth, its impressive military performance, and its influence with the US, among other factors, also helped fuel such shifts.

In addition, the growth of powerful radical Islamist forces has scared a lot of countries. One could (falsely) romanticise the PLO as a progressive national liberation movement. Iran, Hamas, and Hizbullah are a harder sell.

Two other important Israeli relationships are more complex than the rest. Turkey has an Islamist-rooted Government which portrays itself as a Centre-Right party. Many of its instincts are anti-Israel but its performance is not. There are four reasons for this: A policy of friendship with Israel is used to prove the party isn’t Islamist; the party has taken in centrists and conservatives who are pro-Israel; good economic links are mutually beneficial; and, the military —— whose interests cannot be forgotten —— wants a strong alliance. Like other countries, Turkey also knows that cooperation with Israel is necessary for Turkey to play an important diplomatic role in the region. Turkey’s brokering of Israel-Syria negotiations proves it.

Finally, Russia. Again, like Turkey, there are key diplomatic and economic considerations. The Russians benefit from a balanced policy which allows them to maintain good relations with Israel, Syria, and Iran simultaneously. Of course, that is also a problem for Israel, since Moscow sells weapons to Syria, paid for by Iran, which are also passed to Hizbullah. Yet Russia also limits friction by limiting arms sales and supporting some degree of sanctions.

In all these cases, then, Israel’s relations are quite reasonably good. That’s a remarkable balance sheet whose positive elements should not be underestimated.

Norway - a paradigm for anti-Semitism

'I would like to take the opportunity to remember all the billions of fleas and lice that lost their lives in German gas chambers, without having done anything wrong other than settling on persons of Jewish background."

This is what Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen said on Thursday 27 November on the country's largest commercial TV station. Much worse, however, is that the director of the station defended this expression of "satire."

A week later Jespersen, in his weekly TV appearance, gave a "satiric" monologue of mixed anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli remarks. He concluded by wishing the Jews a happy Christmas. But then as an afterthought, he said this was not proper as the Jews had murdered Jesus. Two years ago the same comedian burned pages from the Tanach in front of a TV camera, but this was no reason to terminate his employment. Jespersen explained that he wouldn't burn the Koran if he wanted to live longer than a week.

LAST WEEK, on four consecutive days, there were anti-Israeli articles in Norway's second-largest daily Aftenposten. The first called for a general boycott of Israel. The second promoted an academic boycott, falsely accusing Israeli physicians of participating in torture and the Israeli Medical Association of remaining silent about it. Any honest debater would have reported that Israeli hospitals routinely treat Palestinian children, some of whom express joy when suicide bombers kill Israelis. One wonders whether any other country would allow this.

The third article stressed the right to criticize Israel. This is a typical attack on a "straw man," as nobody denies this right. The fourth claimed that Israel is not a democracy. Only thereafter a pro-Israeli voice was heard.

Two years ago the conservative Aftenposten got international attention when it published an op-ed by Jostein Gaarder which until this day remains the vilest anti-Semitic article published in a European mainstream paper since the Second World War.

Whoever wants to understand how Jews might live in a future democratic Europe if no major counter-forces are mobilized should study Norway. Among parts of the elite there, Jew-hatred and rabid anti-Israelism intermingle. The country's population numbers only 4.6 million. The Jewish population, even before the war, was never more than 2,000. It now numbers 1,300, of which only 700 affiliate with the organized community. Yet Norway must figure prominently in any future history of post-war European anti-Semitism.

Norwegian anti-Israelis keep repeating that their anti-Israelism is not anti-Semitism. One only has to check their statements against the European Union's working definition of anti-Semitism to see that this is often untrue. Norway has a long history of anti-Semitism. In 1929 a great majority of its parliament voted to forbid shechita (Jewish ritual slaughter) - several years before Hitler's Germany did so. It is still forbidden, although hunters, including government ministers, can legally kill animals in as cruel a manner as they want. Last year Norway aimed to kill 1,000 whales, but succeeded in finding only 500. If all needs for kosher beef were met by local shechita,it would require at most several tens of cows annually.

During the war, the Norwegians were the ones who rounded up Jews and robbed them before shipping them off to Auschwitz. After the war, emergency help was given to what the Norwegians called the two "hardest-hit groups" - fishermen and residents of the northern part of the country. The Jews, however, were robbed further by the Norwegian democrats. During the restitution process, they had to pay for the administration of those of their assets recovered from the looters. About 10 years ago a senior Norwegian Nazi official proudly told a Jewish visitor that he had no regrets, and still had paintings and furniture taken from Jews.

In the new round of restitution in the mid-1990s, several authorities did their utmost to avoid paying. Berit Reisel, the only Jewish member of the commission of inquiry, states that she was threatened by chairman Oluf Skarpnes, a former Justice Minister. He told her that if she didn't go along with his proposed report, it would cost her dearly as far as her life and health were concerned. Reisel added that a few days later she was attacked on a street in Oslo.

AFTER THE beginning of the second intifada, several Jewish children were harassed in school. The aggression was supported by teachers on several occasions. Since then, the Jewish community has kept a low profile. When asked by the press, its leaders will admit there is anti-Semitism, but claim that critics overstate it. They usually remain silent on the anti-Semitic aspects of anti-Israelism.

Norwegian hate cartoons often mix anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism. Some are straight-out anti-Semitic, such as one which appeared in the Labor movement daily Dagsavisen in 2003. It portrayed a Jew with a long beard reading the new Ten Commandments, including "murder, kill, liquidate, execute." During the Second Lebanon War, anti-Semitic incidents in Oslo were the most severe in Europe. The synagogue was shot at, the cantor was attacked on a main street and the Jewish cemetery was desecrated. The Jewish community's president Anne Sender was thereafter quoted in a European Jewish Congress report speaking of the considerable "atmosphere of intimidation and fear."

Anti-Israelism has been built up systematically in Norway by trade unions, media, some prominent Christians and politicians. The demonization is classic: major media report negative things about Israel while obfuscating or omitting Palestinian suicide attacks or declared genocidal intentions. The main counterforce is a small group of Christian friends.

NGO Monitor has analyzed how significant governmental development aid reaches NGOs engaged in political campaigning against Israel and in support of extreme Palestinian demands. The good the Norwegian government does, including subsidizing the rebuilding of synagogues in Poland, cannot be offset against the infrastructure of hatred it supports.

I may be mistaken, but I think the primary motive of the Olmert-Livni-Barak government for waging war against Hamas in Gaza is to restore control of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority as a preliminary to the establishing a Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria. These dismal—if not pathological—politicians have not really abandoned Oslo. The "territory-for-peace" syndrome is ingrained in their mentality perhaps as much as murderous hatred of Israel is ingrained in the mentality of the Palestinians.

There is another factor that may be motivating these politicians. They see that the birthrate of religious Jews in Israel will soon relegate them and their co-secularists to the political wilderness. To postpone this day, they are attempting to eviscerate the national identity or historical consciousness of the Jewish people, which is intimately linked to Judea and Samaria and Jerusalem, the tangible place names of the teachings of the prophets of Israel.

It is in this light that we are to understand why such words as "Judaism," Zionism," and "Eretz Israel" were deleted from the Soldiers Code of Ethics under the Rabin government—when Ehud Barak was Chief of General Staff. That government emasculated the Jewish content of the public school curriculum.

Notice, moreover, that Israel's ruling elites are multiculturalists: President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Education Minister Yuli Tamir, Defense Minister Ehud Barak—and let us not forget the ubiquitous influence of former Supreme Court president Aharon Barak. These elites have been tainted by the cultural relativism prevalent in Israel's "liberal" universities.

Underlying Israel's leftwing's policy of territory for peace, therefore, is an "undeclared" cultural war. The same sort of war is occurring in the United States, where the university-bred doctrine of moral relativism modulates the news media, the courts, and the leadership of the Democratic Party.

The ultimate issue is as large as the survival of Western civilization, the primary source of which, along with classical Greek philosophy, is the Bible of Israel.

Three years after being evacuated from settlements in the Gaza Strip, some of the evacuees are now returning - in uniform. Aharon Cruz, a paratroops officer, lived in Netzarim for two years before the disengagement.

On Sunday, he and his unit, to which he had been recalled a mere day after his wedding last Thursday, were back at the settlement's ruins in central Gaza. "On one hand, there's a feeling of 'what did we leave for?'" said his father, Rabbi Ze'ev Cruz. "On the other hand, there's joy that he is returning to a place he knows."

The ground operation has aroused strong feelings among the evacuees. Some see it as a first step toward returning to their former homes. But most simply want to shout "we told you so!" And the feelings are intensified among those who have sons serving in Gaza. "It's a very difficult feeling," said Ami Shaked, former chief security officer of the Gush Katif settlement bloc, whose son is a paratrooper. "This is the first war in which my son is defending me instead of me, him." But beyond that, "everything we said then has come true. What is happening today reopens the wounds. The thought arises that perhaps we shouldn't have given in; perhaps we should have been more insistent, ratcheted up the struggle another notch. But that's history."

Yossi Neuman, a reserve officer in Southern Command who once lived in Neve Dekalim, was called up over a week ago. His son Itai, a tank commander, called him yesterday from the ruins of Netzarim. "It's a destructive feeling," Neuman said. "I'm here on an emergency call-up and my son is fighting for what we once had. We said missiles would haunt Ashkelon and they said we were delusional. We lost our homes and our lives for nothing, for nothing at all in exchange. And in the end, we're returning to fight there."

For many evacuees, the feelings were heightened by the news that the son of Zvika Bar-Hai - a West Bank settler who was one of the leaders of the fight against disengagement - was seriously wounded on the first day of the ground operation.

But the army's return to Netzarim was particularly emotional for former residents of that settlement. "I got text messages that said 'stop everything, we'll soon be back,'" said one, Itzik Vazana. "We're hoping for the day when we return. I think we've come a long way from the expulsion until today. We've made a big circle, and in the end, we're returning to Netzarim. Tomorrow morning we won't return to the settlement, but it's a process that will ripen slowly."

"It's a stab in the heart," added another, Eliyahu Ozen. "Today it is clear that when I lived in Netzarim, I was the country's flak jacket. Today, I live with the feeling that I did my job. Too bad they didn't want it any more."

It has been conveniently forgotten how the near-brain-dead Sharon abetted and followed by the cowardly Olmert (or in French "Olmerde") "withdrew" all Jews from Gaza, leaving it "judenrein"--cleansed of Jews--for the enjoyment (and destruction) of and by the Moslem Arabs.

All this present violent attack by the "nations of the world" on Israel could have been spared her, had the Kadima governments not sold out to the Saudi-Bush-U.S. pressure to "free" the perennially "victimized" Arab Moslem squatters, be they on Gaza, Judea or Samaria.

The world’s attempts at the peace process can only be understood in historical context. On their own, they are unintelligible. Why, indeed, the countries are so concerned with national rights of a three-million-people no-nation? [The self-styled "Palestinians." ed. lw] The West doesn’t support independence for hundreds of liberation movements worldwide even when they clearly involve historically, linguistically, and genetically distinguishable nations. Nor is the West overly concerned with one country taking another’s land: the paragon of democracy had itself annexed a third of Mexico; Russia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and France annexed core German lands. Nor is anyone really concerned about suppressing minorities, especially when they are hostile: there is no need to appeal to the well-known example of Russia and Chechens when France legalized Breton names only a few years ago. It’s also hard to see how is the West concerned with religious freedom in the places like Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps Israel is pushed to inessential concessions only? On the contrary, the Road Map plan demands us ceding the Temple Mount, Jerusalem, and Judea. If there are Jewish territories on earth, those are the ones. It’s a sort of Russia abandoning Kremlin or America selling the White House.

Maybe some painful concessions are historically normal? Not for victors. There is not a single instance in the world history when an attacked country won the war, conquered the land from its enemy, and then relinquished it out of goodwill. Israel was attacked half a dozen times in six decades; taking over the enemy’s land is a historically standard retribution.

Is there any benefit for Israel in agreeing to the concessions, however bizarre? No, they are clearly suicidal. No state can possibly exist in eight-mile-wide borders, let alone a state besieged by three hundred million enemies.

International attitude to Israel is clarified by the auxiliary demands. Israel has to fight nicely, send her children into urban combat, and even there somehow inquire of the terrorist affiliation before shooting. Israel has to be liberal – that is, abandon Judaism which demands strict morality. Israel has to open herself to foreign influence, thus forgoing uniquely Jewish lifestyle. Israel has to be democratic: in plain English, allow Arab voters to subvert the Jewish state. Israel has to be tolerant to minorities and accept Arabs as one third of her population. What remains of the Jewish state when all those ultimatums are implemented?

Look further. The US, our closest ally, bans our attack on Iran which will get nuclear weapons the next year. The US Administration is therefore okay with nuclear Iran which wants to wipe Israel off the map. This is not an isolated event: America condemned Israel for bombing the Iraqi nuclear reactor. In 1967, the outlook was apocalyptic, Jews digged tens of thousands of graves and prepared for total annihilation, but the US barred us from preempting; likewise in 1973. Two years after Holocaust, the United Stated and Britain did not give their UN votes for establishing Jewish state. When the state was established nonetheless, they embargoed weapons sales.

Polls indicate moderate anti-Semitism in America up to 1937, around 15%. In the terms of today’s polls, those were hardcore anti-Semites, with about twice that many latent Jew-haters. Not surprisingly, then, that polls indicate a sharp rise of American anti-Semitism in 1939-41 when papers delivered the news of anti-Semitic repressions in Germany and Austria. Common Americans saw that anti-Semitism is actionable and socially acceptable. During the war, polls steadily placed Jews as the most disliked group in America well ahead of its German and Japanese citizens.

In 1944, Germans came up with an offer to release up to one million Jews; the Allies refused to negotiate. When Jewish organizations scrambled to collect the necessary amount, the Allies informed them that the borders would remain shut. The Jews were sent to Auschwitz.

During the Holocaust, America, Britain, and Russia conducted daily radio broadcasts on occupied territories. Millions of people listened to every word. Not a single time had the broadcasters warned the Jews to flee or told about the massacres. Stalin knew about the extermination from day one, Roosevelt and Churchill – at least from January 1942, probably earlier. Their intelligence intercepted German radio transmissions with exact numbers of murdered Jews, but they did not warn the Jews to flee. So when the Jews boarded the trains to Auschwitz, the name meant nothing to them.

Before the war, when Germans and Austrians repressed the Jews atrociously, Britain concurred with exactly similar measures: just like Germany and Austria, Britain forbade Jews to buy land – in the Jewish national home, entrusted to Britain by the League of Nations. The 1939 White Paper formally reneged on the Balfour declaration and the Mandate’s terms, limited Jewish immigration to a trickle, subject to Arab approval, and blocked Jews from the only place in the world they could escape to.

The free world gathered at the Evian conference to find a place for Jewish refugees. At the time, immigration to the US ran well below the legally established quota; even without moral considerations, the law allowed about 100,000 more immigrants per year. The US and Britain announced they would not admit any refugees, a euphemism for Jewish undesirables. The Britain reneged on its obligation to establish Jewish national home in Palestine just when it was most needed, and curtailed immigration into our own land; a laughable explanation was that the Arabs were upset about the coming Jews – as if the Britain cared in the least about opinions of Palestinian peasants. There was no place for Jews in other parts of the globe-spanning British empire, too. Other countries happily followed the suit. The Germans got the message: their opponents don’t want the Jews anywhere.

The Holocaust was a four-headed beast: America, Britain, and Russia played their parts.

The peace process is just another means of Holocaust.

The Muslim statements, intentions, and ideology are clear: in the long term, they won’t accept a Jewish state in the Middle East. The targets for North Korea, Pakistan, and Iran’s nuclear bombs are clear: Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Ashdod. The disloyalty – or rather nationalism – of Israeli Arabs is clear: in a crisis, enough of them will come up to kill Jews. That Israeli government commits treason on every turn, from giving Muslims the Temple Mount to sending humanitarian aid to Gazan Arabs is beyond doubt. The sour fruits of the peace process with determined enemy are no secret: more than 7,000 Jewish casualties. The map of the Roadmap plan is there on the Internet to see: creating a Palestinian state leaves Israel a 9-mile wide country most of whose territory is Negev desert. Arrogant Israeli Jews disparage the Holocaust victims for sheepishly accepting their deaths; Israelis, for their part, accept the lethal prospects as donkeys. Sheep accept their fate; donkeys ignore it.

It was for a reason that Plato has only awarded voting rights in his utopian state to military aristocracy. The rights belong to those ready to fight for them. Fictional democracy allows brainwashed donkeys to elect a government that kills them on the altar of peace process. The Holocaust generation of Jews, at least, did not elect its executioners.

Indeed, do the Jihadis really need to exert themselves so much in order to bring down the rotten edifice of the SECULAR STALINIST Indian state?

Not to be left behind in prostituting the nation to Islamism, Samuel Reddy of Andhra Pradesh apparently "welcomed" the newly inaugurated U.S Consulate in Hyderabad by organising a protest demonstration by 1000 local Mohammedan sympathisers of Hamas.
