Jewish Roots of the American Constitution

Introduction

Although many of the framers of the American Constitution were not devout, their political mentality was shaped in universities whose curriculum was based very much on Jewish ideas. Accordingly, this essay will be divided into two parts. The first part will show how Judaism, in particular the Five Books of Moses, influenced higher education in 17th and 18th century America. The second part will examine the institutions prescribed in the American Constitution and show their roots in Jewish laws and principles.

A. Historical Background[1]

1. No nation has been more profoundly influenced by the “Old Testament” than America. Many of America’s early statesmen and educators were schooled in Hebraic civilization. The second president of the United States, John Adams, a Harvard graduate, had this to say of the Jewish people:

The Jews have done more to civilize men than any other nation…. They are the most glorious Nation that ever inhabited the earth. The Romans and their Empire were but a bauble in comparison to the Jews. They have given religion to three-quarters of the Globe and have influenced the affairs of Mankind more, and more happily than any other Nation, ancient or modern.[2] (more…)

Bring Down the Olmert Government‏

The only topic for serious people is what means can be used to topple the Olmert government— means that will preclude the ascendancy of a cowardly and treacherous government?

Before pondering the title of this short article, please read those sections of Israel’s Penal Law defining acts that constitute treason:

1. the category of acts which "impair the sovereignty" of the State of Israel—section 97(a);

2. the category of acts which "impair the integrity" of the State of Israel— section 97(b);

3. the category of acts under section 99 which give assistance to an "enemy" in war against Israel, which the Law specifically states includes a terrorist organization;

4. the category of acts in section 100 which evince an intention or resolve to commit one of the acts prohibited by sections 97 and 99.

Now, with the above Penal Law in mind, please inform me how joining the Likud Party—a party that surrendered some 40 percent of Judea and Samaria to Israel’s enemy, the PLO-Palestinian Authority, a party, therefore, that has prime facie committed treason—how, I ask, can joining the Likud bring down the Olmert Government and prevent Israel’s demise BEFORE that Government surrenders more Jewish territory to the enemy?

What I Have Told Americans

To radically change Israel’s dysfunctional system of government, which is leading to Israel’s demise, one has to know a little bit about Clausewitz’s concept of ‘the center of gravity*.’

As I wrote thirty years ago in Sadat’s Strategy, an enemy’s ‘center of gravity’ is the necessary but vulnerable precondition of its strength. With respect to Israel, Clausewitz’s dictum that in “small states dependent on greater ones, it lies generally in the army of their allies would seem to apply. However, since the army or military power of Israel’s ally, the United States, cannot itself be directly attacked, it must be outflanked by an assault on public opinion”—in a democracy, a force more powerful than armies.

Clausewitz’s dictum prompted Anwar Sadat to shift his allegiance from Moscow to Washington in 1975. This enabled him to regain the Sinai without firing a shot after he won over American public opinion by his historic visit to Israel in November 1977, when, in a speech from the Knesset broadcast around the world, he intoned the word “peace” (salaam) almost one hundred times in 50 minutes!

Yes, Israel’s ‘center of gravity’ is public opinion in the United States. Hence we need to ask: What is there about American public opinion regarding Israel that endows Israeli government with legitimacy and its ruling elites—politicians and judges, academics and journalists—with respectability? The answer: Israel’s reputation as “the only democracy in the Middle East.”

Indeed, it is precisely Israel’s reputation as a democracy that has sustained the corrupt government of Ehud Olmert despite its dismal failure in the Second Lebanon War, a failure that strengthened Iran, today America’s most dangerous enemy.

Suppose it was shown throughout the United States that Israel is NOT a democracy? And suppose that, contrary to 1977, when Israel was very much dependent on American military aid, the $2.28 billion Israel now receives from the U.S. in military aid is less than 1.3% of its $170.3 billion Gross Domestic Product. In fact, I have shown that the U.S receives far more in dollar value from Israel than Israel receives from the U.S.

Think of this and its potential consequences.

Complaints we have in Israel against American Jews are not directed at the various George Soroses or Noam Chomskys, or at those Jews uninterested in the fate of the Jews in the Jewish state. We address our cries to those for whom Eretz Yisrael still holds a place in their hearts – and to their organizations and institutions. We ask them the following: Where are you in our hour of need? Don’t you know that if we sink, the ground beneath your own feet will quake? Have you not yet learned that the very fact that the Jews have their own country has buttressed your status in the Diaspora?

Until this very day you regret your silence during the Holocaust, which derived from your great admiration for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and from the fear of being accused of dual loyalties. . . . today your conscience is called upon once more to make a similar decision – albeit one much simpler, for today’s America is not like the anti-Semitic America of that time.

Don’t you understand the danger looming over Israel? The entire world, led by the United States, is hunting Israel down to wrest from it Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, the Land of the Bible – its entire raison d’etre as a Jewish state.

Take note that only the center of the country still enjoys calm. The only reason for that is that the army controls Judea and Samaria, and that is because there are hundreds of Jewish towns there (“the settlements,” in the language of our enemies). And now, the United States is pressuring your Jewish brethren in Israel to dispense with even that defense. President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have sworn to establish a Palestinian terror state right next to Tel Aviv, Netanya, Hadera and Haifa before year’s end – and toward that end, expel 300,000 of our Jewish brothers and sisters.

And faced with all this, you remain silent? Worse, most of your organizations support this anti-Jewish, pro-Arab policy! Today, missiles are flying from the ruins of Gush Katif and landing in the Negev. On the day that missiles are being launched from the ruins of the Jewish towns in Samaria, please don’t say, “We didn’t see. We didn’t hear. We didn’t know.”

You knew very well! The Annapolis Conference, in which a blind, stumbling, defeatist Israeli government open to American pressure knowingly consented to commit national suicide, occurred in your country. Rice, whose total identification with Palestinian interests is patently obvious, is applauded by your audiences. And you call President Bush, the man with the “vision” of a Palestinian state that will endanger every city and village in Israel, “the greatest friend Israel ever had in the White House.”

Other voices in the Republican camp, namely Vice President Dick Cheney, senators and congressmen, have not enjoyed support from most of American Jewry . . . .

For Jews faithful to their patrimony, some Christian churches are more open today than many Jewish temples. Their organizations and media are more open to nationalistic Jews than are the mainstream Jewish establishment. They visit Hebron, Shiloh and Beit El – places that many Jewish leaders stay away from.

. . . money is not the critical factor. It is political pressure capable of meeting the enormous Arab pressure. Regarding your historic omission during the Holocaust, when you failed to exercise your power as Queen Esther did in her time (ignoring the risk to her own life), you have tried to atone with money. Yet all the money in the world cannot bring back to life a single Jewish child. Even today, it is not money that can save us, but rather the political power that you are afraid to exercise.

I conclude with two requests: First, that those Jews who support the Palestinian line should at least not emphasize their Jewishness . . . . Second, that the not insignificant number of Jews who, like Mordechai in the Scroll of Esther, do not bow down before the president of the United States when he sets out to replace the vision of the prophets with the “vision” of Palestine, should organize themselves and establish an organization paralleling the Jewish protest organizations that in Israel face off with the government and block with their bodies the slippery slide down the Palestinian slope.

Today, like the air we breathe, we need an organized Jewish political force in the United States that, together with our non-Jewish friends in America and the Jewish nationalist camp in Israel, can breach the siege that is closing us off.

An Urgent Public Message from Prof. Paul Eidelberg

The well-known Israeli Attorney Elyakim Haetzni belatedly writes in The Jewish Press: “Today, like the air we breathe, we need an organized Jewish political force in the United States that, together with our non-Jewish friends in America and the Jewish nationalist camp in Israel, can breach the siege that is closing us off.”

For more than a decade I have been calling for the establishment of Jewish political force, i.e., an organization, in the United States with a parallel organization in Israel, to prevent Israel’s demise—this in the same Jewish Press for which I have written more than 1,000 articles since 1988. I have given said organization various names such as a “shadow government” and even “Israel’s Future Government-USA” (IFG-USA).”

To date, IFG-USA has representatives in at least seven American cities and some 300 members. Hardly a single Jewish or Zionist organization in Israel or in the U.S. has supported this idea. As for Israel’s “nationalist camp,” it consists of ersatz groups that have yet to set forth a comprehensive set of ideas and institutional proposals to save this country—certainly nothing comparable to the program of IFG-USA or of the Foundation for Constitutional Democracy (of which I am the president).

It is with reluctance that I publish this message, but Israel is facing a catastrophe of the first magnitude thanks to its craven and treacherous government as well as the failure of Israel’s elites to reveal the need for REGIME CHANGE.

POLICE SIDE WITH ARABS

Is it because the cowardly Olmert government wants to lean over backwards to appear "even-handed" in the eyes of its American bosses (Bush, Rice, & co.)? Or is there such hatred and fear (that they may spoil "peace*" with the Arabs) of the Jews determined to remain a presence in Hebron, the site of Machpela**, by the Israeli authorities?

You may have seen the report a couple of days ago about an Arab youth who stole a woman's hat, across from Ma'arat HaMachpela. A you may, or may not know, many religiously observant Jewish women keep their heads covered, as regulated by Jewish law. An Arab on a bicycle flew by her, grabbed the hat on her head, and kept going.

A small group of Hebron residents arrived at the scene and demanded that the police and soldiers close Arab stores across from the Ma'ara, where the crime had occurred. "If you close their stores because of this, they (the shop owners) will bring you the culprit themselves!"

To no avail. Border police lined up in front of the stores to protect the Arabs.












Later that day the Arab was discovered, apprehended, taken to the police station and then released.

So much for him.

At about seven in the evening a scuffle broke out between some Arab youth outside Beit HaShalom, and some of the Jewish kids living there. One of the Arabs punched a little boy in the face and stole his bicycle. When the police arrived they asked for a description of the attacker. "Sounds familiar," they commented. They made their way to the home of the same youth who had stolen the woman's hat in the morning, and there they discovered the bicycle. The attacker was the one and the same Arab who had taken the hat hours earlier.

A little while later, the Hebron boy who'd had his bicycle stolen, and his father, were at the police station. As they were leaving they saw the Arab who'd attacked the boy sitting alone in the waiting room. You can imagine what went through the father's head: Yes, or No - Clobber him, or, Don't do it.

In the end, he didn't. His son went over and stuck his tongue out. And they left.

As they exited the police station, they heard gasps and screams coming from inside. Quickly police ran out and grabbed the Hebron boy's father.

"What did you do to him," they screamed.

"What are you talking about?"

"Can't you hear him? He's rolling on the floor in pain. What did you do?!?:"

The police pulled him inside and began interrogating him. Again and again, 'what did you do."

Finally he answered: 'my son went over and stuck his tongue out at him. Maybe he kicked him. That's all. Nothing else."

The police officer looked at him and said: "OK - if that's your story, let's check it out. There are cameras in the waiting room. Let's see what we have on film."

So, they all sat down together to view the Hebron night out at the movies, in the police station. And to their great surprise, and also chagrin, they discovered that it was as he'd said. He hadn't done anything to the Arab who'd punched his son.

It seems that the little terrorist-in-training has good teachers.

*The Arabs do not want "peace;" they want Israel. They want to turn in into an Arab state called "Palestine" (Falasteen?) The Arabs will from time to time agree to a cease of hostilities (hudna in Arabic) so that they can regroup and rearm as per the example of their "prophet" who did the same.

IS ISRAEL A TRUE "DEMOCRACY?"

A Brief Message from Prof. Paul Eidelberg

What perpetuates the dysfunctional and treacherous government of Israel is its reputation as a democracy in the United States. The myth of Israeli democracy endows the government with legitimacy and its ruling elites—politicians, judges, academics, journalists—with respectability. Expose this myth in the U.S. and it will be immediately felt in Israel, especially among the elites. This is the most expeditious way of initiating basic institutional reform and regime change in Israel. For this, a well-financed and professional organization is needed in America, either in New York (perhaps better in Washington, D.C.) as well as a parallel organization in Israel.
